While most students leave college saddled in tens of thousands of dollars in debt, a few AHCCS students will be career-ready with the training they need to enter the workforce, should they wish to choose that path. Achievement House Cyber Charter School 11th grade students Zachary Beyer and Andrew LaFiura have successfully passed a series of three exams to earn their IC3 (Internet Core Competency) certification. This accreditation is a worldwide benchmark that gauges a student’s basic computer and digital literacy. It also serves as an excellent foundation for earning other certifications. The IC3 certification is a valuable tool for students like Zachary and Andrew for securing jobs after graduation or for gaining acceptance to their chosen college.

The IC3 is ideal for any students who seek to possess critical computer and internet skills which are valued assets in most work or academic environments. Those who acquire this certification successfully demonstrate the skills and knowledge that are necessary for the use of computer hardware, software, networks, and the Internet.

Zachary and Andrew have both expressed an interest in computers and have been able to further explore their interest through various classes and clubs.

“I have always really been into computers,” stated Zachary. “Ever since a young age I loved figuring out how they work, how you can put one together, the code that runs everything and the parts that run everything.”

Both students chose to take computer-based courses offered by Achievement House’s Innovation Career Academy such as Introduction to JavaScript and Introduction to Computer Science to assist in their preparation for the IC3 certification.

Achievement House Computer Science Teacher, Carmela Curatola, was an instrumental factor in Zachary’s and Andrew’s IC3 certification success. Ms. Curatola’s course structure and teaching methods greatly assisted each student to feel fully prepared for the certification test. Also, she was always available to help or answer any questions. Both students agreed that Ms. Curatola was a big reason why they were successful in receiving their IC3 certification.

“I could not be prouder of both Andrew and Zachary’s accomplishments,” stated Ms. Curatola.  “Their perseverance to study for and pass 3 individual exams leading up to the IC3 certification exemplifies their individual motivation to accomplish a goal.  It is a real honor and privilege to work with Andrew and Zachary and observe their achievements – congratulations to each of them!”

Zachary and Andrew also expressed their belief that they would not have been given the opportunity to earn the IC3 certification if they did not attend Achievement House Cyber Charter School. A driving factor for both students in enrolling in this type of educational program was the flexibility that a cyber education offers.  This flexibility has allowed Zachary and Andrew to take advantage of the many opportunities that are offered by the Innovation Career Academy, including certifications like the IC3.

“Achievement House is a great school,” stated Andrew. “I have been attending this school since 7th grade and it just keeps getting better. All the support that I have received has been incredible.”
