Music in our Schools Month or MIOSM is a celebration of musical communities from around the country in a partnership through the National Association for Music Education. While many traditional school districts find themselves cutting arts programs because of funding concerns cyber schools allow students to take a different approach to music and arts education. What started as a small community celebration has grown to a nationwide month of advocacy, awareness and the importance of music education for our children in just over 30 years!
Just like in a traditional school, cyber students at Achievement House take music classes as part of their required curriculum, and as electives. Middle School music focuses on Music Appreciation in a broad range of topics. Music 7 explores music in society, and Music 8 analyzes music as communication.
At the High School level, students can enroll in Music Theory 1 or 2. The basics Theory 1 allow students to recognize, understand, and describe the processes of creating music. A broad range of topics are covered including hearing and notating pitches, learning different scales and chords, and music writing techniques. Theory 2 builds on theses fundamental principals and introduces students to advanced terminology and composition techniques.
Other music courses include Music Appreciation: The Enjoyment of Listening (a PLATO course), Music in American History and Movies & Music. These courses are designed to broaden the knowledge base for our students and contribute to a well-rounded curriculum and learning experience. The flexibility of a cyber school schedule allows for students who are musically gifted to hone their talents on their own time through private lessons or community programs.
