As we near the end of the academic year, AHCCS would like to celebrate exemplary students in our “Senior Spotlight” blog series. This series will feature students who have made great strides during their time at Achievement House Cyber Charter School, such as graduating Senior and the Class of 2023’s Valedictorian, Lucy Brayton.
Lucy a student at AHCCS since 7th grade is very excited to have earned the distinct honor of Class Valedictorian. In the fall of 2023, this impressive senior will be attending Saint Vincent College as a Political Science major as well as playing on the college’s golf team. Lucy’s choice to enroll in cyber school aligned better with her learning style and academic goals. She also valued the opportunity to take different classes not always offered through her local school district. Upon reflecting on her high school years, Lucy has truly faced every academic, athletic, and personal challenge with a positive outlook and has done her best to adjust to whatever life throws at her.
As Lucy stated, “Everything in life can be a challenge so you have to face everything with a positive outlook.”
Lucy is a four-year varsity letter golfer for her local school district. Cyber school not only enabled Lucy to excel at her sport but also academically succeed. She was able to achieve her dream of attending college as a student athlete by learning to balance her focus and managing her time for schoolwork, golf, and other activities. Lucy truly believes that AHCCS has helped her prepare for her future. She has been able to get the education that she desired while being about to work and play golf.
Lucy said, “It is a lot of change at once, but I am excited for everything. Being able to build my own schedule and keeping to it has helped me build time management skills, discipline, and determination to do well in school.”
In the future, Lucy is interested in working for the government or in politics and possibly attending law school. She has been fortunate enough to have already shadowed lawyers in Pittsburgh’s District Attorney’s office. Lucy has big plans after she graduates from college which include entering the workforce and traveling.
Lucy said, “I have been able to sit in on some cases with prosecutors and be in on the action. Observing has helped me understand more than just watching cases on the television. So, I am excited for the future!”
Lucy will be making the trip out with her family from the Pittsburgh area to give her Valedictorian speech at AHCCS in-person graduation ceremony at West Chester University on June 17, 2023. Lucy has never attended a graduation before and is looking forward to the entire experience.
Lucy said, “I am excited to put on my cap and gown, receive my diploma, and then move on to the next chapter of my life.”
